About Us
The Institute for Kurds was
founded with a mission to advance understanding
between Americans and Kurds in order to improve
the lives of both communities through better cooperation
in the vital arenas they are destined to interact
in throughout the twenty-first century. The founding
members of the Institute believe that the American
presence in Kurdistan at the turn of the century,
combined with the daily interaction between Kurds
and Americans will heighten their mutual interdependence
for decades to come. Seeking the enhanced welfare
of both communities, the Institute was established
in January 2004 as an independent, non-profit
and non-partisan organization based in Washington
DC that is dedicated to:
- Promoting educational opportunities
to enhance public knowledge and understanding
of Kurds, Kurdish history, heritage and culture,
including providing financial and other assistance
to Kurdish schools and universities and establishing
Kurdish studies and research programs in American
centers
- Encouraging the development of Kurdistan in
order to benefit the most vulnerable sections
of the population
- Fostering friendship and cooperation between
Kurds and Americans by supporting activities
in the United States that lead to increased
public appreciation and understanding of Kurds,
their history, culture and heritage, including
Kurdish contributions to the arts
- Countering bias, prejudice,
discrimination and misinformation in the American
media by educating the American public about
Kurds and ensuring that media coverage of Kurds,
and issues affecting Kurds, is accurate, balanced
and fair
